There are those who suggest you can tell a Eurovision song a mile off. They’d go so far as to suggest they all sound the same. Those of us who know better can point out that Euphoria isn’t terribly similar to 1944, but still the myth persists.
It’s around about this time in the national final season that we tend to hear songs that might not be entirely original. On the whole, it doesn’t matter because they tend to sink without trace, but when the song is a favourite to win a national final, things get more serious. Even more so when it’s likely to end up as the song representing the 2018 host nation – Portugal.
Clouds of drama
Diogo Piçarra was the outright winner of the second heat of the Portuguese national selection on Sunday with Canção do Fim. And those who heard the song couldn’t help but notice how it sounded strangely familiar. It was ever-so-slightly (or let’s be blunt, note-for-note) to ‘Abre os meus olhos’ a tinkly old song song penned by Pastor Walter McCallister.
Piçarra, to his credit, quickly backed down, announcing yesterday that he didn’t want to ‘feed this cloud of drama‘ – which we assume is muso-speak for ‘end up in court’.
