Well, my first impression of this is that it is less of a “hot mess” than I expected and, in fact, I’m slightly let down.
The preview video was all sorts of female empowerment Shiz, including girl-on-girl action, and I get the lyrics and the sentiment. In fact, I believe I said something like it needs to be toned down. What I didn’t expect, however, was the bat shit dial turned down from 879 to about 5.
The 4 of them that are on stage are in various emerald green dresses Samanta’s has some shoulder pads last seen in Flash Gordon (You’ll need to check who Dale Arden is), with the backing singers having full-face shields in the shade of green you used to see on a sun visor of a 1981 Ford Capri (other cars are available, natch). This is contrasted by the backdrop exploding into life in a melange of gold swirls and lots of fizzing and hypnotic movement.
She’s supposed to be a “queen”, and she has that pathetic crowning hand gesture down to a tee, but I fully expected a tiara or something in actuality, but it’s projected onto the background as just gold hands (Yes, Shirley, literal gold-fingers). Very little movement apart from some arm waving and the like means that several tricks have been missed which could have made this stand out whereas, to me, it’s just another one of those average songs and performances.
