So we close today with the big favourite from the tiny nation – Malta. Is winning Eurovision to be Destiny’s fate? The answer could be about to be revealed.

Well, this is bold! The stage is awash with bright colours: yellow, pink, with Destiny herself in a pink fringed leotard with thigh-length pink boots, one of which is part-rolled down her right leg. She turns on the sass and boy, can she sing! This is as flawless a Eurovision vocal as you’re ever likely to hear.

But something isn’t quite working here. I anticipated a little more personality, and that doesn’t come through quote as much as I thought. And you know what? I just don’t think the costume is right. I think it casts Destiny more as a slightly tawdry showgirl when she needs to be seen as a diva.

I think I expected something a little classier, though I’m aware of the irony of a middle-aged man, however gay, calling the shots of what fashion choices a teenager should be making. What I do love is Destiny’s boldness to choose this.

There’s a lot of fun going on here, but I think a little more of it needs to come through on the camera. We need to feel a little more connected at home rather than just onlooking. But there’s plenty more rehearsal time for that. Valetta 2022 is not a shoo-in, but it’s not off the cards yet.
