Mo’s Eurovision Countdown 2019 – Iceland

I like that Hatari bring variety to a show that often drifts towards the musical middle ground. Without doubt, their Tel Aviv performance will feature for many years on those ‘isn’t Eurovision mad‘ clip shows. Just like Verka and Dustin the Turkey.

Thing is, I lived through the 70s and I (think I) know the difference between true punk spirit and this – a cynical play for attention.

The song itself isn’t half bad, but for me, the overall package feels like something devised in the boardroom of a Reykjavik PR agency. Sigue Sigue Sputnik Part 2.

‘Hatrið Mun Sigra’ will likely split viewers, and to score even one point, you need to feature in someone’s top ten. A high-performing Eurovision song needs broad appeal. For every person who loves this, there are likely two who will scratch their heads.

All that said, I defend its being there to the hilt. Despite my lowly score, it can’t fail to be in the running. Let’s not forget, Verka very nearly won.

But, it isn’t anywhere near my top ten, so …
