Moldova withdraws cos all its songs are pants

I’m genuinely not making this up.  That is, effectively, what Teleradio Moldova have said this morning.   Their announcement says the following (with a dodgy translation clearly!)

The Republic of Moldova withdraws from the Eurovision Song Contest 2025. The announcement was made by the director of the national television, Moldova 1, Corneliu Durnescu, and the head of the Eurovision Moldova Delegation, Daniela Crudu, on January 22. The decision was taken “following a detailed analysis of the current situation, as well as the economic, administrative and artistic challenges,” the organizers said. Although it withdraws from the contest, Moldova 1 will broadcast live the two semifinals and the grand final in Basel, giving viewers the opportunity to watch the competition in the best conditions.

The decision was not an easy one, but necessary in the current context. This year’s national selection highlighted certain challenges, including a decline in audience interest and the overall quality of artistic plays and performances. This fact generated a negative perception among specialists and the public, underlining the need for a substantial reform in the selection process, said Moldova 1 director Corneliu Durnescu.

He said that TRM aims to review the selection criteria and methodology, in order to encourage a wider participation of talented artists and to provide a more consistent and competitive cultural representation on the international scene.

We consulted specialists in the field of music, and most of them expressed serious reservations about Moldova’s participation this year, in exact agreement with the opinion of the jury that TRM selected for this edition. We respect the opinions of professionals and the general public, and we understand that we must make responsible decisions,” said Corneliu Durnescu.

According to the director of Moldova 1, the Eurovision competition involves considerable costs, including for the organization of the national final, the production of the show, the promotion of the artist, travel and accommodation of the team, stage production, technical equipment and other associated expenses. The participation fee of the Republic of Moldova communicated by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) is 21,486 euros and not 176 thousand euros as it was circulated in the public space, Corneliu Durnescu stressed.

“The public broadcaster remains at the disposal of anyone to provide the necessary information. We are committed to being transparent and Eurovision is no exception. At the same time, we cannot allow public opinion to be misled by false or malicious narratives.”

The director of Moldova 1 said that TRM will reallocate for other projects the resources planned for this year’s participation in Eurovision.

“This decision was not an easy one, but we assure you that it was analyzed in detail. We know that we would all have liked to organize a national final and designate the song that would represent us at the international stage. However, we are firmly convinced that this decision will boost the interest in participation for future editions. We will make sure that we will come back to Eurovision in force. It is important to support people who want to reach big stages and to give them the opportunity to prepare better,” said the head of the Eurovision Moldova Delegation, Daniela Crudu.

Is it niet too late for withdraw?
If I remember, they still have to pay participation fee, when withdrawing so late, so they will not save any money there.
