26 May – What you give is what you get

You can always tell when a country is seriously gunning for a win. They seem to up their game, just to bring themselves to Europe’s attention. And then, bang, they have that win under their belt.

Today’s birthday girl Ines (née Eda-Ines Etti) was part of Estonia’s assault on the podium. She was a year too early, but made us think “Hmmm, Estonia, it’s only a matter of time”. Sure enough, Ines had a future winner in her entourage. So her fourth place, whilst welcome, must have started to give broadcaster ETV a few palpitations. Ines didn’t get a single maximum, which goes to show that you don’t need the really big points to do well. All points count, and those 8s, 7s and 6s are just as important as the 12s. Ines has tried since 2000, but has yet to get there. But who wouldn’t love to see Estonia win again?

    Ines is 43 today.

    Palju õnne sünnipäevaks, Ines!

    30 November – Everything’s just fine, there’s nothing wrong

A prop is always a good thing to make your song stand out just that little bit more than the rest. The question is: what kind of prop do you use? It could be a big sparkly glitter ball. That works, but can get in the way. Or there’s a collection of macabre instruments of torture. They can work, but need added pyrotechnics. But the real prop that seems to be the fallback is the costume change.

We’ve seen them all over the years. One change, two changes, change from male clothing to female clothing. But one of the more memorable ones came from today’s birthday girl Linda Wagenmakers. Along with her noteworthy surname, Linda had the dress that not only caught the attention, but had men hiding underneath it. And they weren’t even criminals. They were her dancers. She almost didn’t take part due to a disaster in her home country. But we’re glad she did, even just to see her frock.

    Linda is 48 today.

    Gefeliciteerd, Linda!
