  • Is Remo blue? – Swiss speaks about everything.

Is Remo blue? – Swiss speaks about everything.

Remo says he has been very busy on his trip and is one of the few that have said that they have done some sightseeing – it’s ” Super Brilliant” (god I hate phrases that start Super).

He is asked what languages he speaks, only German and English. Does he think he can beat the other contestants in a watergun fight?  He says yes, in fact he beat Rylan in a fight – admittedly that is not that hard.   He’s always been a Eurovision fan boy and the dream came strong for him to represent Switzerland.  He saw Marius Bear last year and decided to do it.

As a talent show alum, he says his experiences will help him no end at the contest because he is used to cameras and press and all of the trappings that go with it.  He says that his nerves are calmer now because of this and hopes that he should qualify – with the first goal getting to the final on Saturday and he is aiming for the Top 10.

Remo says the fan love was always going to be on another level and he agrees that everyone is so lovely and he was totally shocked by the level of support from the fans.  What essentials did he pack for Liverpool? – Apparently his lucky shiny grey pants and some medicine, clearly the lunch of champions!

Apparently Blue were Number One on the day he was born, but he has not listened to their Eurovision entry because he has a very bad memory – don’t we all, son!  Favourite entry? – Luca, of course and if asked who would win the contest, he says Switzerland – this lad has been media trained.

He likes GTA and Minecraft which is ironic as the song, as he says, is about a kid who grows up with a watergun and now is in a war.  It’s a very emotional song and Remo loves telling the story.    Would he come back? – Yes!

It lI feel I should start this round up with a “BONG!” sound effect but I don’t know how to do that, so thankfully for you, you get my prose and some tickey tock videos – you lucky punters.

    Estonia

It seems that Ailka has had wardrobe issues which wont have helped her cause but it seems to have been simply staged as most Estonian songs are.  The lights on the back of the stage are effective.

Thirty seconds is still way, way too much of this song for my liking. My dad heard her sound check and said ” Iceland, you’d better stay there” – From the mouth of people that don’t watch the contest! – Simplistic staging suits this song but the song might not suit Europe.  She’s a gifted athlete though, handsprings are difficult.

Seemingly Iru is getting married shortly after her performance because she is bedecked in her wedding dress with a train that any blushing bride would die for.  Unfortunately she appears to be singing in a Force 10 tornado with the wind machines up to the max.  Looks dramatic, though I worry for her hair!

So they decided, at the last minute, to change the key that the song is to be sung in because neither of them could sing it.  I mean, I guess its a positive thing, right? – This staging looks like it is going to rely heavily on the both of them not fucking it up and i’m still willing to take odds on that happening. So, Phil and team, what are YOU going to be doing with your shiny laminated badges?

    Hello world!

Yes it’s those two weeks of the year where the Eurovision internet is a-buzz with stuff about Europe’s favourite television show.

However this year, changes are afoot, as you may have seen. The First AND Second rehearsals are CLOSED to the press, in, officially, an attempt to ensure the artists make mistakes in peace but, more likely, so Ticky-Tock can get their mitts on some footage that we haven’t got, and eurovision.tv gets to control the story of the contest. Hint: everything is great.

It’ll never work – because we, the fan press, have been doing this shit for too many years and will find ways round things to give readers the quality original contest that you deserve!

    Eurovision 2023 coverage

A bit like last year, the first four days will have close to radio silence because, well, no one wants to show us anything. We’ll be digesting the delegation TikTok lives from 3-6 May … in lieu of those boring old press conferences which no one attended. And then, Mr Phil and Mr Nick will be on-site, and Mr Mo will be remote, from May 8 and will stick to these rough times for live blogs and stuff.

  • First Eurovision rehearsals begin in Liverpool

First Eurovision rehearsals begin in Liverpool

The 2023 Eurovision Song Contest takes place in Liverpool on May 9, 11, and 13, 2023. Today saw the start of rehearsals.

    Technical rehearsals

From today and over the weekend, technicians and production staff will work around the newly built stage to trial lighting, props, camera runs and sound for each of the competing songs. During this time, the production team, alongside each country’s delegation, works tirelessly to perfect every detail. Key elements of the technical rehearsals include:

    1. Stage setup: The stage is assembled, and each act’s unique set design is tested to ensure a seamless transition between performances.
    2. Lighting and sound: Lighting designers and sound engineers work closely with each act to create the desired atmosphere and audio balance.
    3. Special effects: From pyrotechnics to fog machines, special effects add drama and excitement to each performance. The rehearsal process ensures that these effects are safe and well-timed.
    4. Video projections: With the increasing use of video projections in ESC performances, the technical team must ensure that the visuals are sharp and well-coordinated with the live act.

    Stand-in rehearsals

Once the technical aspects of each performance have been fine-tuned, it’s time for the stand-in rehearsals. From Monday, local performers step into the roles of the actual contestants, allowing the production team to perfect camera angles, transitions, and other visual aspects of the show.

    Here come the stars

The rehearsal process for the Eurovision Song Contest is carefully orchestrated to make sure each act has adequate time to prepare. The typical schedule is as follows:

    1. First technical rehearsal: Each act has a 30-minute technical rehearsal, allowing them to familiarise themselves with the stage, sound, and lighting. There’s to be no access for media or fan sites to these rehearsals, so you won’t get anything like the coverage seen previously. The EBU has promised some short TikTok coverage.
    2. Second technical rehearsal: Acts have another 20-minute technical rehearsal, during which they can make any necessary adjustments and refine their performance. Again these are closed to media, though will be streamed through the online press centre – as an accredited website, OnEurope will bring you reports.
    3. Dress rehearsal: Participants perform in full costume, and the entire show is run from start to finish, including the hosts, interval acts, and voting sequences.
    4. Jury show: A live audience is present, and the jury members watch and vote on the performances. This show is not televised but is crucial in determining 50% of the final score for each act in the final, though will not this year count for the two semifinals.
    5. Live shows: The Semi-Finals and Grand Final are broadcast live to millions of viewers worldwide.
  • Eurovision Secrets Revealed: The Essential Role of Stand-in Rehearsals

Eurovision Secrets Revealed: The Essential Role of Stand-in Rehearsals

As the OnEuropeans prepare for this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, the artists and their teams are hard at work rehearsing for their big moments. Like every fan site, we spend lots of time talking about rehearsals, but before they even start, something else happens behind the scenes: stand-in rehearsals.

    What are stand-in rehearsals?

Stand-in rehearsals are a key part of the Eurovision Song Contest’s production process. They serve as a testing ground for the technical, staging, and performance aspects of each act. During these rehearsals, stand-in artists and performers take the stage in place of the actual contestants. They are young musicians and students from the host city, selected based on their vocal and performance abilities, ensuring that they can closely mimic the contestants’ style and energy.

The first stand-in rehearsals take place weeks before the live shows, providing the production team with ample time to fine-tune every aspect of the performances. This period is essential for identifying and addressing any potential issues, such as camera angles, lighting, sound, and special effects. They act as the first real ‘proof of concept’ for the stage building and set design teams.

The first stand-in rehearsals offer a chance for the entire production team to work together and ensure that all aspects of the show are coordinated. From the sound engineers to the lighting technicians, everyone involved in the production can familiarize themselves with the acts, fine-tune their roles, and ensure a seamless production.

The importance of the first stand-in rehearsals

Eurovision is known for its elaborate staging and impressive visual effects. The first stand-in rehearsals allow the technical team to test out these elements, ensuring that they are executed seamlessly during the live shows. These rehearsals also provide an opportunity to test out camera angles and transitions, which are crucial for creating a dynamic and engaging television experience.

Stand-in rehearsals can reveal issues with ideas for staging or choreography, leading to adjustments or even complete overhauls. Costumes or styling choices may not have the desired effect on stage, or be practical for the performance. Often, they expose issues with the sound mix or vocal arrangements. This means making adjustments to the backing tracks or harmonies. The production team and delegations may decide to make changes to enhance the visual impact of the performance, such as altering camera movements or adjusting lighting cues.

The aim is that by the time the actual performers arrive for their first rehearsal, the basics are in place and little should need to change.

Do stand-ins ever make the main stage?

Stand-in artists are often talented singers and performers in their own right, and their involvement in Eurovision can open doors to future opportunities. Some past stand-ins have gone on to take part in the Eurovision process over the years, such as participating in the national selections for their country or even becoming backing singers for other countries’ artists in the contest itself.

Ellen Benediktsson was the stand-in for French singer Amandine Bourgeois in 2013.  The show producer, Christer Björkman approached her to perform a song in the Swedish Melodifestivalen the following year. In 2016, Renaida Braun stood in for Bulgaria’s Poli Genova. Two years later she made it to Melodifestivalen.

In the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest, Go_A, the band representing Ukraine, faced a challenging situation when their lead singer, Kateryna Pavlenko, tested positive for COVID-19 just ahead of the live shows. As a result, she was unable to participate in the second round of rehearsals on May 13, 2021. Their stand-in artist, Emmie van Stijn, joined the band for their second rehearsal and was then invited to be part of Go_A’s Green Room team the Tuesday evening show.
