13 February – I’m out of my head, I don’t know what to say

As you’ll remember, 2016 was a very exciting and close contest. The new voting system meant you didn’t quite know who would win until just before the winner was announced. It hasn’t always been the case, with the winner being known ages before the end. Back in 1993 – for those of us around then – it went down to the last vote.

Our friends in Malta couldn’t deliver their results until the end, meaning either Ireland or the UK could win. Niamh Kavanagh of course triumphed and today’s birthday girl Sonia was left as a runner-up. But wherever you’re from, the close voting is a far better thing.

Sonia is 46 today.

Happy birthday, Sonia!
