21 December – There is no bed for this fire

We’ve seen many changes in Europe since Eurovision started in 1956. Countries have come and gone, revolutions have happened. And through it all, countries still have the chance to put these changes behind them and send us a song.

In the 1970s, things were a little turbulent in Portugal. After their Eurovision song saw the start of the Carnation Revolution, so things were still a little raw two years later when today’s birthday boy Carlos Manuel de Ascenção do Carmo de Almeida – Carlos do Carmo to those int he know – went to The sunny Hague with a fado. His song of sadness was one of the few slow songs in 1976, and he still managed to pick up a maximum amongst his 24 points. There is a place for fado after all.

Carlos is 80 today.

Feliz aniversário, Carlos!
