28 February – Forests could still sing

Remember when betting was a small simple affair. You bet on a song to win, or one of those each way things? Life was simpler then.

I say this because today’s song was one of the favourites in its year. It had the pedigree and was very jury friendly. But it wasn’t to be, beaten as it was by the UK of stuff and Germany. Who’d have thought that some of the modern Big 5 would fill the top three spots. Jean Gabilou (né Gabriel Lewis Laughlin) had a song by a winning writer and it might have made a good winner. And as he was born in far-flung Papeete, he might have been the contest’s most exotic winner ever.

Jean is 74 today.

Bonne anniversaire, Jean!
