The President of Spanish broadcaster RTVE, José Pablo López may request the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) disqualify Israel from the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest.

Replying to a question from Spanish MP Francisco Sierra (a member of the left-wing SUMAR alliance), López revealed he will raise the matter at the next meeting of the corporation’s Board of Directors.

Privatisation

He also noted that a move towards privatisation of Israeli public television network Kan will mean it can no longer remain an EBU member. He also pointed out that, unlike in 2024, so far no other EBU member network has in place any formal demand that Israel withdraw from the annual music contest.

Israel was subject to calls to drop out of last year’s Eurovision Song Contest due to accusations of committing war crimes and violating international law in its military actions against Palestinians. So far, this year Slovenian RTVSLO is the only broadcaster to have issued a call for Kan to withdraw. They have since dropped their objection.
