I may say this once in a while, but there were actually Eurovision Song Contests before 2001. Crazy isn’t it, to think about things taking place that far back. People even tell me there were contests in a thing called black & white. It was in the late 1960s and 1970s that this change from monochrome took place and people were experimenting with colour to start with. Bright coloured suits that could have been worn by third-rate children’s TV presenters were popular. And then there were those that thought that, since some countries still watched in black & white, why wear colour. So thought the UK of stuff’s Mary Hopkin in 1970. As you can see, no expense was spared on the set. Mary is 65 today.
Happy birthday, Mary!
