Many of those non-Eurovision fans (yes, they do exist) wonder why Israel takes part in our favourite TV show. After all, it’s not in Europe, is it? But they fall within the Eurovision Broadcasting Area, is what I’m sure your answer to them is. Tunisia, Egypt and Jordan could take part if they wanted to, is what I’m sure you always add. So it must have come as a shock when Israel hosted the show in 1979. And the first song performed outside of Europe was by Maria Manuela de Oliveira Moreira Bravo, whom you’ll know as Manueal Bravo. Bravo for her is what I say. Manuela is 57 today.
