CYPRUS – Shh – Theo Evan
A couple of years ago Spain sent a song with a title made up entirely of vowels, and it didn’t really work out well for them. The Cypriots have clearly listened and learned – televoters obviously don’t like vowels.
Now Cyprus were one of the last to declare this year, so I’m still familiarising myself with this one a bit, but it’s got my spidey senses twinkling. Or tingling, I can never remember which. I had to search my memory bank for the Sash! influences that should be obvious to most – when the cool kids were listening to that kind of thing I was mostly listening to Kolig Kaj, and actually that probably explains a lot right there.
The waffle and gentle nonsense here is because really I think Theo hasn’t shown us all of his cards yet. This might end up being very good indeed, the songwriting team has strong credentials and the booking of Sergio Jaen as performance director can’t hurt in that direction. The producers choosing it to close the semifinal might also hint that we have one to watch out for.
I’ll be looking out for this one when we start to see rehearsal snippets. It’s a watching brief, but this is one of the ones where I had a small bet at decent odds based on the rumours. Do I love it? Truthfully I don’t know yet, but I can’t deny that it has potential.
