Phil’s Eurovision Countdown 2025 Part 20/37 – Italy

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Volevo Essere Un Duro by Lucio Corsi

I was made, with a bit of cojoling, to watch Sanremo 2025 so I could say “I’ve been on that stage”.  Dear reader, RAI do wonders with smoke, mirrors and a very small stage.

Lucio didn’t win, as we all know, he came second but happily took the ticket to a country next door so lets have a listen to the song which I genuinely can’t remember.

<listens to song>

It takes me back to the Italian songs of the mid 80s in many ways with the way that the verses and chorus’ fit together musically and that is not a bad thing but half of the new audience that Eurovision has brought in won’t get the reference.  I’m clearly at the age that this song is aimed for which is lucky cos I am the median age of the jurors in this contest.   It has that familiar feel that they will love and, based on the Sanremo performance that I am looking at, he’s not going to overplay his look which I guess is an Italian Freddie Mercury…. Perhaps….if you squint hard enough.

This song is classy enough to have the simple performance that happened on stage repeated at the contest itself, it doesn’t need to be overblown or over thought because Lucio is just the right side of preposterous for this all to fit together.

Yeah – I like this a lot.

Phil’s Score : 8 Points.
