It’s technically a debut for the newly monikered North Macedonia, the country formerly known as The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Having settled with the Greeks on the nomenclature. The country may have a new name, but its performer Tamara is no stranger to the Eurovision stage, having been a third of Tamara, Vrčak and Adrian in 2008. There she finished 10th in the semi-final, missing out due to the jury rule that saw Charlotte Perrelli squeak through ahead.
Wherever she ends up this year, she’s nobody to blame but herself, as she flies solo and proud, although sister Tijana, – who represented (FYR of) Macedonia in 2014 – is on hand in the video. The song is an address to women and girls everywhere; a power ballad of female empowerment.
I like the theme, but the problem is I like it much more than I do the song. It’s a bit of a dirge, sonically, against its motivational lyrics, and isn’t bringing anything especially inspirational to the mix.
It’s been a long wait since Kaliopi last got them into the final, but on this evidence, it’s going to be yet another year at least.
