Albania’s Eurovision future had looked uncertain in recent weeks, but broadcaster RTSH has now confirmed the country will take part in next year’s contest in Vienna. The news follows reports in Albanian media that RTSH’s new director, Eni Vasili, has successfully renegotiated a debt settlement with the European Broadcasting Union.
At the time of writing, neither RTSH nor the EBU has confirmed these reports.
What is confirmed is that RTSH had fallen behind on membership and production payments, with sums in the region of €30,000 plus more than CHF 138,000 (around €140,000) believed to be outstanding. According to Balkanweb and other outlets, the EBU sent a formal warning letter in August, raising the possibility of sanctions that could have cut off Albania’s access to EBU services — including participation in the Eurovision Song Contest.
Vasili, who took charge of the broadcaster earlier this year, acknowledged what she described as a “catastrophic” financial situation but said an agreement has now been reached with the EBU to restructure debts and put Albania back on a stable footing. While neither RTSH nor the EBU has issued a detailed public statement, multiple Albanian sources report that a repayment plan has been agreed, lifting the immediate threat to Albania’s Eurovision involvement.
The development means Albania will proceed as planned with Festivali i Këngës, its long-running national selection show, to pick the act for Vienna. RTSH has used FiK to select every Albanian entry since the country’s debut in 2004.
The debt issue highlights the less glamorous side of Eurovision: broadcasters must not only stage shows and select songs but also remain in good standing as EBU members, with annual dues and fees for content rights. Several other broadcasters in recent years have been suspended or threatened with sanctions over unpaid obligations.
For Albania, the immediate danger appears to have passed. The focus now shifts back to music, as FiK prepares to celebrate its next edition with the winner guaranteed a place at Eurovision 2026.
