Can you always pick a winner? Do you see it make its way through the Eurovision season and think “Yes, that’s the one”? Or are you often surprised when [insert country here] wins the big prize?
Occasionally a song wins that can catch you unawares. One that took us (or the author at least) by surprise was a duet, co-performed by today’s birthday girl Nigar ‘Nikki’ Aydin qizi Jamal. She paired up with Eldar Gasimov in Düsseldorf and won by a bigger margin that we often think. They didn’t even win their semi-final, and didn’t get the most maxima in the final. It just proves that we can get that accidental winner. Or was it? Did it feature in your top 10 in 2011, or did it have one of those qualities you can’t quite put your finger on. Anyway, it meant we went a long way east in 2012…
Nikki is 45 today.
