Starting with the Finnish

Sandhja representing Finland with the song "Sing It Away" during a rehearsal before the first semi final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 in Stockholm.

I’ve started with a Mister Naef moment as my computer failed to connect to the network in the press centre. Having spent some tense minutes with the IT desk I can confirm that the customer service so far is marvellous, them having managed to get me back online part-way through Finland. Tack!

So Finland. Oooh! Sandhja’s sporting a brave choice of outfit. It’s not tipping the Trintje scale, but it’s a sartorial disaster right in the opening number. It’s a catsuit in what looks like velour. The jury is out on the colour: sky or baby blue, say some, but I’m seeing it more as turquoise. She begins solo and is joined by a chorus funking behind her before she struts to the front of the catwalk and back. Plenty of camera shots to show off the arena.

I’d say the catsuit – and the colour – are ill-advised, but I can’t quite believe anybody would have advised this in the first place. Perhaps it’s the model’s own? She’s at risk of looking a bit clammy by the time she takes to the stage. Behind this all is the song, which has not come up any in its first outing. She’s a bit pitchy at times, but this is early days, and remember these aren’t finished products. It is, though, the Finnish product, and so far its shelf-life beyond next Tuesday is looking unlikely.
