Some would say that the secret of the success of a song is its publicity. If you can get your song into the public conscience, then you’re well on the way to doing well.
Such was the pathway followed by today’s birthday boy بلال حسني/Bilal Hassani. Towards the end of 2018 he was selected as a finalist in France Télévisions’ Destination Eurovision. Through the power of media, and the strength of the song of course, he stormed through two rounds of singing to go to Tel Aviv. Straight through to the final, of course, and Bilal mixed it with 25 other acts. He didn’t win, but instead managed a middling finish. Does that mean that his media campaign had run out of steam? Or maybe because his very progressive presentation was maybe a bit too progressive?
Bilal is 26 today.
