The early 2020s were not that long ago, yet they seem like an age now. A contest was cancelled and a certain Mr Laurence became the only one to be a champion for two years. And a crop of performers selected for 2020 also got the 2021 gig.
One such performer was today’s birthday boy თორნიკე ყიფიანი/Tornike Kipiani. He’s got a severe look about him, that would definitely appeal to some, and sang a song that contained a soupçon of anger in 2020. We’ll never know how it would have done. Undaunted, GPB still sent him to Rotterdam the following year with a ballad that also appeared to contain a bit of angst. The televoters of Europe liked his song more than those jury experts (except for one). It was always going to be a challenge. Perhaps if Georgia could have sent their 2020 song again, things might have been different.
Tornike is 37 today.
