29 June – Turn around and show your face

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Remember Germany? They win very occasionally and also finish near the bottom of the table? A country in the middle of Europe bordering lots of places?

Well they don’t always win or finish badly. And they don’t always have a German singer. In 1973, birthday girl Gitte Hænning went nicely multi-coloured and, despite being Danish, got the gig for her southern neighbour. Denmark had taken a sabbatical so it made sense for her to peddle her talent around other places that were taking part. In those days, she was guaranteed at least 32 points and she could only get a maximum of 160. She got over 50% and still finished eighth. I’m sure ARD would give its best pumpernickel to do that well these days.

Gitte is 78 today.

Frohe Geburtstag/Tillykke med fødselsdagen, Gitte!
