31 January – No one gives a **** about what’s soon to come

Look at the running order of almost every contest, and you’ll see one nation pop up, doing their level best to win. That’s right it’s Germany. With a couple of wins and a clutch of less auspicious finishes, you can always rely on them.

In sunny Malmö in 2024, ARD did the usual national final tomfoolery and today’s birthday boy Isaak Guderian got the golden ticket. Many were portraying his song as very beige, but it was barely that. With a staging that may have summed-up how the Malmö contest ended up, he managed a finish on the left-hand side of the scoreboard. It just shows how wrong those beige-sayers can be. We wish Isaak well, and he was always up for a bon mot at any Eurovision gathering.

Isaak is 30 today.

Frohe Geburtstag, Isaak!
