2 January – And the mermaid keeps on asking

What do you like about Eurovision? The singing? The costume? The fact that various culture from about our fair continent lock horns in a battle that can only make for the betterment of Europe?

It’s none of these. It’s about alcohol. Some songs look better through the haze of that mystical brew that comes in many liquid forms. It’s such an integral part of our favourite TV show that a song once featured it in its title. It came from Koza Mostra, ably assisted by today’s birthday boy Αγάθωνας Ιακωβίδης/Agathonas Iakovidis. He’s the one with the little guitar and the award-winning moustache. He turned down the chance to wear a kilt, but it didn’t stop the song finishing sixth.

Agathonas is 64 today.

Χρόνια πολλά, Αγάθωνας!
