The début entry. It can produce the most mixed of results. Does a brand new country ‘get’ Eurovision? Or have they been ignoring it for years and just hoping for the best?
Début countries have won, and début countries have left without a point. Today we look at a début that finished third. That’s a pretty good result by anyone’s standards. It came from Latvia, performed by Brainstorm (aka Prāta Vētra). They are fronted by today’s birthday boy Reynard Cowper/Renārs Kaupers. ‘My star’ was a breath of fresh air, injecting an air of contemporary-ness to proceedings. They got four maxima, although four countries ignored them. But this song changed the contest and Latvia would hit the top spot within a few years – they were definitely here to stay. And Reynard, the scamp, would come back as a co-host of the biggest contest ever held to that point. Is this a classic? We think so.
Renārs/Reynard is 50 today.
Daudz laimes dzimšanas dienā, Renārs!
