It’s often a quandary for countries on what type of music to enter in our favourite TV show. Do they go for something generic – Schlager if you will – to appeal to the masses of televotes eager to vote? Or do you send something more authentic?
Our friends in Portugal like to stay authentic and do something fado-related. It sometimes works, sometimes doesn’t. In 2022, RTP sent today’s birthday girl Maro (née Mariana Brito da Cruz Forjaz Secca) and her pals to Torino/Turin with a subtle little number. Very few Nordic-style bells and whistles here, and a song that was a little bit fado. It finished fourth in the first semi-final and ninth on the big night, proving that you don’t need a costume change or sandwich maker on stage to do well. Am honest song can pay dividends. And it was Portugal’s best finish since Salvador won.
