Eurovision is a funny old thing. You can be up one moment, and have your hopes dashed the next. Take those pesky semi-finals/preselections for example. You get through, not quite knowing how, but hoping for the best.
A precursor to those semi-finals happened in 1996. Twenty-nine went in and twenty-two came out, yo join the hosts. Today’s birthday boy Antonio Carbonell (Muñoz) was one of the lucky 22, so maybe he thought he’d romped home and won the preselection. He actually got through in 14th spot. So onto Oslo and things didn’t go quite as well as planned. Four countries had Antonio’s song in their top 10. Flamenco maybe was not what Europe desired in 1996.
Antonio is 56 today.
Feliz cumpleaños, Antonio!
