Our friends in Switzerland were the first winners of our favourite TV show – no, it wasn’t L*r**n after all. And their span of wins stretches over 68 years. Unlikely ever to be beaten. But in addition to three wins, they’ve had their ups and downs.
In 1986, the Swiss mounted a challenge to Belgium’s only win. We say mounted a challenge, it was one of those years when we had a dead cert winner and lots of also-rans. So maybe in any other year, today’s birthday girl Daniela Simons (now Daniela Borruso-Şereftuğ). Daniela demonstrated her prowess at the piano – a shiny white one – while wearing a white suit and being on a white set. Any passing snow plough might have run her over. Anyway, Switzerland scored off all but one country (a neighbour too) and gave everyone’s favourite Confederation’s best result since 1963. And then stuff happened two years later…
Daniela is 65 today.
