You have to feel for the United Kingdom of Miscellany. They once ruled the roost with guaranteed high placings. Then along came the pesky 21st Century, and the UK seemed to lose it way. Only a small number of high placings to show for 25 years of trying – what do they need to do?
in 2024, the BBC internally selected today’s birthday boy Olly Alexander (né Oliver Alexander Thornton). They gave him very free rein with his staging, and maybe – just maybe – that was his undoing. It was highly progressive, and maybe the Walczyks of Rzeszów weren’t too impressed. He did get a smattering of points from juries, whose remit was probably to pick a summer hit. But it just means it’ll be a bit longer before the UK gets another decent finish.
Olly is 35 today.
Happy birthday, Olly!
