Ukraine’s wheel of misfortune

Mariaya Yaremchuk

You’ve all heard about the Ukrainian hamster wheel by now. I was very intrigued to see this. The start shows how vast the stage and surrounding area are, lit very impressively to give a huge expanse of space. In the middle are Mariya, her hamster wheel and her human hamster. She’s in black and silver, which wafts around her with her hair tied back. She struts a bit as your man does all manner of physical jerks in his spinning wheel.

There were a couple of screeching misfires early in Mariya’s vocals but in the turd polishing stakes this is highly accomplished. They really have made it into three minutes you can’t take your eyes off. The wheel works for me; you’re interested in what the boy will do next spinning full 360 degree turns and running for his life in an endless circuit of Mariya yelling at him. At one point he escapes to pull Mariya across the top of the wheel but once he drops her she has him back on her treadmill, sprinting and spinning for all he’s worth. It serves to detract from the song perfectly, and once more the Ukrainian legerdemain looks like it will see another sub-standard song to a lofty position. It looks bloody good though.
