I came in half way through the first rehearsal and my first thought was “I don’t know how this is going to get a point.”.
This is a competitive singing contest where people vote on the things they like – I can’t think for one non-geopolitical reason why you would actively, after listening to all the other songs, pick up the phone and go “Yeah, that girl with the dodgy voice and the interpretive dance, that’s the best thing on this show.”.
I got told in the online press room chat that the young are going to vote for this because they are all on their phones all the time. I suspect, then, they have missed the point of music. Yes, granted, they are going to understand what the song is about but I suspect that pond is going to be very small and very niche, even for the likes of us.
The young aren’t going to vote for this, the mature are gonna say “What on earth is that girl whining on about” because that’s all it ends up being. It’s not a song that people with a problem can latch onto and go ” Yup, she’s in tune with me”. It’s just repetitive and boring and if the only thing you take away from it is “Self Love, Amnesia” sung at you by a girl with a (deliberately?) dodgy vocal then I’m clearly not in touch with modern youth culture.
