Solid Serbia

Sanja Vučić ZAA at a Meet & Greet during the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 in Stockholm.

Serbia sounds great! She delivers this powerful ballad with a message of hope for those trapped in abusive relationships with great class and a terrific vocal. As a song, with this singer, it’s a potential dark horse for this competition. I’m not so sure about the performance though. Four female backing singers who move in formation and a male dancer, whom she’s trying to shake off in line with the song’s story. He mithers her at times, at others moves in the background. He’s a bit off-putting, I can see why she’s sick of him. I think it’s mildly distracting, but it does tell the right story, which is a lot more than can be said for many a presentation at Eurovision.

Sanja’s toned down the Amy Winehouse look from the promo video and has found more for-television discipline in this performance. We’ve been talking about this as a dark horse – it’s maybe just up there as she singing is just so good, but I feel the presentation has limited its chance to steal through and sneak a win.
