In the infinite wisdom of SSR and the EBU, the city of Basel has been chosen to host the 2025 Eurovision Song Contest.
I must say that I am surprised Geneva didn’t get the gig, especially with all the infrastructure the EBU has there, but, then again, Basel is on a tri-border with France and Germany and commutable from either, so it seems, on the face of it, eminently sensible to stage the contest in this gateway to neutrality.
Eurovision venue named
The contest will be held in the St Jakobshalle which is located in a sports complex in downtown Basel, therefore it already has loads of press and fan structures handy, and also a shopping centre and nearby eateries – everyone is going to be well served … at Swiss prices!
The contest itself is going to take place on 17 May 2025, with the Semi Finals on the 13 and 15 May. I suspect these dates were chosen so as not to clash with the Champions League (because thats the usual form).
So, if you are going to sit at home with your arms folded being a grump or following this year’s contest like normal people, welcome to Switzerland – get your overdrafts ready!
