With four national finals planned for this evening, and the 2020 Eurovision dance card almost complete, today started early as Victoria dropped ‘Tears getting sober’ online.
Bulgaria was first to use the now familiar Symphonix team, and have stayed faithful with this typically downbeat slice of agonised gloom with a Eurovision key change thrown in for extra value.
Initial online responses from fan forums have been largely positive, welcoming Bulgaria back to the Contest.
Coming soon
Tonight, Sweden, Finland, Portugal and Denmark pick entries for May. North Macedonia will reveal ‘You’ (its song) tomorrow. Fans have been asked to help San Marino decide between two songs in an online vote closing tomorrow.
On Monday, the Eurovision Reference Group meet to agree plans for the Rotterdam event, at a time of global uncertainty following the Coronavirus outbreak. It’s the deadline for broadcasters to submit full details of their songs. There’s no rule to force any broadcaster to publicly release their song ahead of the May competition.
With just Russia, Azerbaijan and Malta holding back on confirming when we’re to hear their songs, expect to complete the 2020 lineup early next week.
There’s a feeling of inevitability about this. Tens of thousands of fans travelling across the world to congregate in one confined space is one thing – but in fact given the trajectory of where the Covid-19 infections is heading, by mid-May there is not only no chance many of the artists and delegations will want to travel, but in fact some of them could be infected by the time rehearsals start.
Presumably the work to start building the stage and fitting out the venue will begin soon. Ideally the EBU will put a stop to this and save a few Euros. The only chance I can see the contest happening is with video links to each country’s act.
I love the contest as much as everyone else on here, and would love Iceland to win this year, but I think anyone who thinks it’s all going to sort itself out by May and happen is normal is sadly mistaken. 🙁
