Do you like the plethora of languages that the songs on our favourite TV show are sung in? Do you like to hear songs in that particularly obscure tongue? Or do you prefer a decent song sung in a language you can understand?
Our friends in FYR Macedonia/North Macedonia variously tried songs in English and Macedonian – to mixed success. But they also once tried a song partly in Romani. Today’s birthday boy Влатко “Лозано” Лозаноски/Vlatko “Lozano” Lozanoski did the Macedonian element, assisted by the late Есма Реџепова/Esma Redžepova. It was a novel idea, and gave many their first taste of Romani. As we know, aside from one maximum, the brave experiment didn’t quite work. Lozano seemed happy to play second fiddle to the charismatic Esma, but even that meant they remained in semi-final limbo in Malmö.
Lozano is 40 today.
