21 February – Listen carefully to the sound of water

Lily

Eurovision this year isn’t starting to look that bad, especially if you’re a connoisseur of language. Already Belarus’s song is in their native song. Italy looks like it could be all in Italian. Portugal could send Salvador Sobral with his excellent little song, hopefully in Portuguese. And there was the chance that our friends in Malta could have chosen a song in, ahem, Malti. I’m building up to when France went through a stage of picking songs not in French. In 1996 they of course chose Breton. But in 1992 they went a little more exotic by using a language from one of their French overseas departments. It was a brave move to sing in Krèyol/Haitian Creole, and they didn’t do a bad job.

Kali is 61 today.

Bonne anniversaire/Bòn fèt, Kali!
