It’s good to remember our history. You know, those times before 2000 when the contest still happened, even if it was a little bit smaller and, generally, more western than it is now.
In 1970 it was much much smaller, mainly due to a lack of tie-break rule in 1969. Countries picked up their footballs and went away, some for a short time. It gave us a new winner, and twelfth was last place. Just imagine that now. The dubious honour of finishing last went today’s birthday boy David Alexandre Winter (né Lion Kleerekoper). Like many Luxembourg singers, he didn’t actually come from there. Old DAW was Dutch, but you could tell he had a decent French accent. Didn’t stop him getting no points though.
David Alexandre is 76 today.
Guddes Gebuertsdag, David Alexandre!
