LUXEMBOURG – La Poupee Monte Le Son – Laura Thorn
“And so I wrote a song, la la la lalala, ‘bout how you did me wrong, la la la lalala…”
I very much got off on the wrong foot with La Poupee Monte Le Son. The similarities with I Wrote A Song were – still are – front and centre, and if you’re going to rip something off why pick something that scored precisely zero televoting points?
Apart from that one key melodic phrase though, it’s actually a very different package to the one that Mae offered up in Liverpool, and I think it’s a much more appealing one. I’ll never say no to a driving tango beat pushing a song along (at least, I think it’s a tango. I didn’t recognise Cha Cha Cha as being a cha cha cha, so don’t take my word for it), and as there aren’t many things left that happened before I was born it’s lovely to see a callback to one of them.
The slight risk there is that you end up with something that’s targeted too tightly as a Luxembourg song for Luxembourg people and a Nick song for Nick people. I’m pretty sure this couldn’t exist outside of Eurovision, but maybe it kind of doesn’t need to?
Laura throws in a few jury notes towards the end just because you HAVE to these days, the choreography at LSC doesn’t need a revamp but will likely get one… the most I have to offer in the debit column is that all those pesky Other People might well not like it as much as I do.
This has ended up as one of my standouts of the season. To be honest I’ll be more than happy if it ends up top half on the final scoreboard – I’ll be more than happy to see it in the final! – but I really, REALLY like it and it’s vying for the position at the very top of my personal list.
Nick’s score: 12
