Andromache – Ela
So … another year comes round and as night follows day Panik Records get their mitts on a Cypriot entry. And … as sure as the sun will rise tomorrow, they have come up with a Cyprus-by-Numbers typical Mediterranean banger sung by a long-haired woman type person. Anyone who knows anything about this contest – and I include all of you, dear readers – could have seen this coming a million miles off.
In a shock move, though, they have turned the bass down and it’s not quite as ear-bleedingly heavy as most of their previous attempts, but it certainly can not be described as new or fresh or exciting or, more importantly, any good. It’s a re-hash of a re-hash of a re-hash and, yes, it gives you local flavour, but Eurovision is so much more than just pumping out the same old songs and expecting people to blindly vote for it. This is aimed squarely at a diaspora vote to get it through its semi-final and that is cynical… clever, yes, but cynical.
It won’t reach the heights that Cypriot Eurovision fans expect, because it doesn’t stand out like Fuego did. Cyprus would do well to remember that formula was only a one-time deal – move on.
