Sugar by Natalia Gordienko
Those of you who know your Arsenium from your Elnur will recognise Natalia not merely as 2020’s cancelled contestant but also a Eurovision veteran from 2006. If ever there were a glow up across three Eurovision entries Sugar delivers it in a sticky calorific overload. Natalia is backed by the so-called ‘Dream Team’ of Philip Kirkorov and Dimitris Konstantinopoulos, the song writer and producer team behind many successful Eurovision entries and their typical over the top style is clearly on show here.
Premiered at a long, confusing live stream and theatre show from Moscow the video is a sweet delight. Natalia’s using her Sugar as a metaphor, urging her lover to come over for a booty call. He’s almost literally a kid in a sweet shop as a gigantic Natalia drapes herself seductively among a bed of bonbons, candies and allsorts. Giant gaudy-coloured cupcakes and dancing ice-cream cones add lashings of camp, before Natalia gives us some comedy horror schlock by ripping her lovers face off to reveal it’s made of rainbow striped cake that she wastes no time tucking her chops in to.
After a year with most of us in lockdown this could be just the sweet carbs boost we all need. It’s three minutes of fun escapism, and should she bring her dancing ice creams to the Eurovision stage we’ll all be queuing up for a go of her sundaes. I mean, who doesn’t love licking the nuts off a large Neapolitan?
