LUM!X feat. Pia Maria – Halo
Austria appears to have decided a retro vibe is the recipe for success after (in my opinion) over-scoring with drab ballads in recent years.
Lyrically-trite ‘Halo’ sounds like a throwaway 2 Unlimited b-side – the sound of somebody drunk on MD20/20 being fingered behind fairground dodgems. The musical equivalent of a photocopy of a photocopy of a photocopy – and as such, I’m just not its audience. I’ve never thought the DJ playing keyboards with a younger woman singing shtick works that well at Eurovision anyhow, and expect that to be the case again this time out.
This is the kind of act that plays warm-up in Leatherhead for someone who was once in Neighbours.
Although it may stand out in the middle of a decidedly downbeat year, musically, I fear Pia won’t pull off the live vocals and the staging will come across as either empty or try-hard.
It’ll have fans, but I’m not one.
