Singer, writer. It’s a well-trodden path. If you’re a singer worth your salt, you may have dabbled in songwriting too. It implies that you can sing, and understand how music properly works.
No, I’m not rambling. I’m leading up to today’s birthday boy Željko ‘Jacques’ Houdek. He’s co-written this year’s song for his native Croatia. But that’s perhaps not how he’s most famous. In 2017 he sang for his country. I say sang, but where most singers are happy to sing their part, he sang two! Yes, Jacques duetted with himself. An interesting concept that could go horribly horribly wrong. Indeed, it got muted laughter from everyone when we were first told it would happen. Some of us, however, were laughing on the other side of our faces when Jacques’ interesting take only went and made the Grand Final. Maybe a one-man duet wasn’t such a ludicrous idea after all.
Jacques is 38 today.
