A winner? Well, someone has to. And this year it will be one of 40. Well, we can probably discount more than half of the field before they’ve sung a note in competition.
Back in 1977, the field was a mere 18. So lots of votes to distribute between not many countries. You’ll have guessed by now that today’s birthday girl Marie Myriam (née Lopes) won in 1977, and scored points off every other country. That’s a rarity at the best of times, so puts Marie in a very special club. So special in fact, no French has won since even though they’ve had a number of close calls. But this is a quality song, don’t you agree? Or was it the comedy caption that gave it the win?
Marie is 65 today.
Bonne anniversaire, Marie!
