16 March – London Paris Rome became empty words

Just occasionally, we get songs that break the mould. A song so different that it has to be seen to be believed, and our favourite TV show is never quite the same again.

And that brings me onto today’s song. It comes from birthday boy Paul Oscar (né Páll Óskar Hjálmtýsson). If you were around in 1997, you’ll remember him for his sofa. And his direct song. And, maybe, most of all for the ladies cavorting around him. His song scored 18 points. Yes, only 18. However, 16 of those came from a new phenomenon, that we see as second nature now. That is televoting. Four of the five countries using 100% televoting gave him points. Maybe if he’d been a year later, who knows, we could have been in Reykjavík in 1999.

Paul is 53 today.

Til hamingju með afmælið, Paul!
