8 February – You can throw it all at me

Have you ever noticed any families taking part in our favourite TV show? We have had twins, siblings, and even a mother/daughter act. But as it’s been going 65 years, there’s the chance of dynasties emerging.

Today’s birthday girl Svala Björgvinsdóttir might have a familiar patronymic name to go with her enigmatic forename. That’s because her dad Björgvin – known to his friends at Bo – also did his stuff for Iceland, in 1995. No doubt there would be some family rivalry, although dad didn’t need to go through a brutal semi-final when he was in Dublin. In fact, it was that brutal that Svala didn’t quite make it. But she achieved something very special, in that her jury score and televoting scores were almost identical. And she did get to point and laugh at at least one highly-fancied Nordic nation in the Grand Final.

Svala is 44 today.

Til hamingju með daginn, Svala!
