It’s often interesting how certain Eurovision stars crop up in the most interesting of places. Many just get three minutes on stage, and then it’s back to teaching, dentistry, or politics.
Today’s birthday girl Maria Christian (aka Maria McCabe and Maria Doyle-Cuche) did her stuff in 1985, when she opened the scientifically-proven best contest ever. She finished sixth in what was a fairly close race at the top. Fast forward to 2016 and 2020, and she was seen on The Voice programmes in Ireland and France respectively. Whilst doing OK in her homeland, she only made it to the semi-finals of the French version. She was even coached by a certain Eurovision alumna – Lara Fabian – who had taken part in Dublin in 1988. It pretty much completes the circle. Who cares if, in 1985, only one country scored off more juries than Maria, it goes to show that talent will out, whatever the circumstances.
Maria is 58 today.
Happy birthday, Maria!
