Right back at first steps, first principles. Get your song title right. Trijntje is very emotional and upset that I (me, the viewer at home) haven’t taken the step to walk along. What? Walk along where? I walk along all the time. Earlier on I walked along to the pigeonholes, there’s a decent chance that later on I’ll walk along to the press center catering and then walk along to Lost Property where my belt might be. It’s nothing to get excited and emotional about.
Is the actual problem that I won’t walk with you, Trijntje? Well, why ever didn’t you say so? Instead of repeatedly angsting up the same phrase which is NOT what you actually want to ask?
So yeah, that is my problem. In my head, it’s three minutes of “What? I don’t understand what you’re *saying* to me! Please calm down!”.
Surprisingly, I have fewer problems with the performance. A long lingering extreme close-up on the top half of Trijntje’s veiled face for the entire first verse is visually striking. (Last second decision – also have a quick look at how it looks with no epic veil at all – possibly not better). #thejacket may well be replaced with something less ridiculous. Trijntje comes across as genuinely feeling raw emotion, which holds together a latter part of the song which could otherwise get a bit samey.
I think I now have everybody on my “possible qualifiers” list. Providing unhelpful guidance since 2003…
