4 February – Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye

I mention from time to time that we love someone who tries. Even though they’ll never be the continent’s favourite. Often through no fault of their own.

Actually, today’s birthday boy did really well for his native Portugal, and his finishing position has only been beaten by his countrymen and women twice. So that would consider him – José Cid (né José Albano Cid de Ferreira Tavares) a success. But as well as his seventh place in 1980, he’s been seen circling Eurovisions since. In 1998 he was there coming 12th in a group. And he also tried Festival do Canção last year. Wouldn’t it have been cool if he’d won it and got to sing his nice little tradition song in Lisbon?

José is 77 today.

Feliz aniversário, José!
