There’s an old saying: Even a blind squirrel finds the occasional nut. And so it was with Swiss TV at the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest. After years spent festering in the semi-finals with a string of stinkers, Luca Hänni gave the neutral nation its first taste of the big show, ending a respectable fourth.
It comes as no surprise that the Swiss plan to pick their next song in much the same way.
Swiss broadcaster SRF – together with RTS, RSI and RTR – will invite musicians to submit songs between 2 and 16 September.
A 100-member audience panel will sit through them, combining votes with those from an international jury of 20 ‘former jury members’ to pick the best contender. SRF reserves the right to stick with the songwriter’s choice of performer or recruit an alternative.
Eurovision lightning rarely strikes twice, but we’ll hear how this works out early next year.
