I don’t know about you but by now I’m itching for a big gay hands in the air poppers o’clock stomper. And here he is.
Michael Ben David won the Israeli X-Factor and his prize includes the opportunity to mince all the way to Turin. And boy has he grabbed it. Unashamedly fun and self-affirming Michael sings “You can say that I’m stunning, it’s not a shame, ’cause I know I am”. It would be easy to misinterpret a line like that for arrogance, but it’s done with a knowing sense of chutzpah that Michael proves adroit at pulling off.
It’s difficult to imagine this kind of song finding such a mainstream stage without the popularity of shows like Ru Paul’s Drag Race contributing to a more prominent platform for queer culture although tracks like this have been blasting out in gay clubs forever. I’m delighted to celebrate it on the Eurovision stage.
I fancy reactions to this will fall into similar camps as if we were to group fans by how much they like or dislike the flavour Wiwibloggs bring to the Eurovision fan community. I’m in the camp of rather enjoying it. If you do too then snap your fans and get in the queue behind me for one hell of a strut.
